Second Coming

Jackie (Nadine Marshall), husband Mark (Idris Elba) and their eleven-year-old son JJ (Kai Francis Lewis) are a close family navigating their way through life in present day London. Family dynamics, banter and humour are part of their everyday lives. Jackie discovers she is pregnant and is perplexed. Their marriage is strong but as busy working parents she and Mark haven't been physical in their relationship for a while. Jackie's confusion regarding the pregnancy grows to concern as she increasingly believes that the baby can't be Mark’s. Knowing that she hasn't slept with anybody else, Jackie says nothing of her situation, trying to maintain everyday life. The pregnancy progresses but with unsettling side effects and she starts to fear for her state of mind. By her second trimester, unable to hide her pregnancy JJ and Mark respond to the news. JJ is excited and Mark nervously delighted. Jackie is increasingly stressed. When Mark realizes the due date for the baby means it can't be his, his joy turns to bewilderment. Unable to explain the situation Jackie says little. Mark's fury and Jackie's reticence starts tearing the family apart. Heavily pregnant, isolated from JJ, Mark, friends and family Jackie is at a loss to make sense of what's happening. The unnerving side effects of her pregnancy get worse becoming increasingly alarming and questions her own sanity. At the height of the emotional turmoil and damage Jackie knows she is doing to the family, the baby is born. A year later. The baby's first birthday. Jackie and the family celebrate with a barbecue, Jackie embarrassed that she may have been suffering from a temporary psychosis during her pregnancy.
