About this movie

In her debut cinematic adventure, join detective-extraordinaire, the Hon. Miss Phryne Fisher, as she embarks on a globe-trotting romp of mystery and mayhem across the exotic 1920s deserts of the Negev, glamorous manor-house ballrooms, and the darkened back alleys of London. Enjoyable enough if you are already a Miss Fisher fan but disappointing in many ways. The plot was weak with hardly any twists or surprises and no tension or suspense. The pace seemed slow with less action than a regular TV episode. The cinematography was great with some creative edits and a good effort to reproduce the rich visual imagery that characterises the TV series, costuming was also good and Miss Fisher looked great and played her part convincingly. However, the script gave Jack very little to work with, he was cast as a disgruntled suitor most of the way through so we didn't get to see his usual boyish charm and affection for Miss Fisher which was sorely lacking. If you watch the TV show mainly for her then you will probably enjoy the movie but if you are more a fan of Jack and the romance between them then you might be disappointed.

I love Miss Fisher, I love the series. I was so excited when I saw the movie was on Google Play. I bought it straight away and watched it with anticipation and what a disappointment! It could have been so much better. The plot is weak and predictable with so many holes. Visually, they tried but it looks fake, the format used is not appropriate for this kind of adventure film. The cinematography was a let down. And what about the main character, Miss Fisher. We love her because she is a free spirit, she is witty, funny, irreverent, independent, etc. At the beginning of the movie, it's her, no doubt. But, arrives Jack and everything we love about her is gone. "Jack, I don't need you, I am so independent." 5 seconds later, "Jack, help, I need your help!" All through the movie. But why?? The damsel in distress act is so out of character. It really disappointed me. What a sigh! Essie's costumes are beautiful, I missed the great music from the series. However, the inaccuracy in representing the traditional Palestinian costumes, jewelry and face tattoos were astonishing to me. Essie is trying her best with what is given to her, Nathan page looked tired and bored all through the movie. If you want a great adventure movie about an empowered woman who is an adventurer, an explorer, a journalist, a writer, who is funny and irreverent watch The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec.

I agree with Virgo la but only to a certain point. Yes, the plot was predictable, aren't so many of them? However, loved Phryne, loved Jack, loved the costumes, loved the plot/story/theme and they finally got to kiss without interruption because they wanted to. Finally!! I think Phryne and Jack kept their persona throughout. Whether the scenery and culture was true to form or not, it was a movie and a very pleasant one to watch compared to so much that is being produced nowadays. Well done team. Thanks to the funders who made it possible. I look forward to the next one, please.
