About this movie

This is the year 2022. Overcrowding, pollution, and resource depletion have reduced society's leaders to finding food for the teeming masses. The answer is Soylent Green - an artificial nourishment whose actual ingredients are not known by the public. Thorn is the tough homicide detective who stumbles onto the secret so terrifying no one would dare believe him.

I've wanted to see this for so long, and it's been worth the wait. Surprisingly, "Soylent Green" is a literate, intellectually stimulating portrayal of life in the not too distant future. Maybe it's a little too realistic for comfort, but that what's makes it such a good film. Extremely downbeat for a Hollywood movie, but prescient, and compelling. The visuals of a rundown society with no food, and the majority of people living on the street confront the viewer with a world of the future that could possibly become a reality. Charlton Heston is outstanding as a police detective investigating the mysterious death of a rich and influential businessman. Edward G Robinson has a poetic turn as a philosophical old man who knows this world he is living in is not the one he cares to remember. "The scoops are coming for you" is a memorable phrase in a sequence that illustrates the fate of the unnamed and neglected poor who rebel against their fate with disastrous consequence. I don't understand why this film isn't more well known, but with enough word of mouth, it should reach the audience it deserves.
