The Blitz

Originating from the German word for lightening (Blitkrieg) the British press coined the term The Blitz, to describe the Luftwaffe's mass air strikes on the UK from 7th September 1940 to the 11th May 1941. Over 40,000 civilians were killed, with more than a million houses destroyed in London alone. This new documentary looks into the build up to the air raids and detailed footage of the destruction that followed. With interviews from those who lived through it and stories of sadness but also extreme bravery. 80 years on this is a definitive look back at a period in time when Britain was on the verge of being invaded but held strong through stubborn defiance and a sheer will of the entire nation to never surrender.
