The House of the Devil

The House of the Devil

Directed by Ti West

A stranger lures a babysitter to a house with an unusually large sum of money. But when she arrives, Samantha doesn’t find any kids. Just a large and very creepy house, that may not be as empty as it seems. Indie horror director Ti West (THE INNKEEPERS) made his mark with this terrifying ‘80s throwback, featuring cult horror legends like Dee Wallace (THE HOWLING), Mary Woronov (NIGHT OF THE COMET), plus Greta Gerwig - before she hit it big. You’ll never bop around listening to headphones in an empty house again after watching what happens to Samantha. Contains violence and gore.

wasn't for me. found it very disappointing after all the hype. i felt it was very ineffective at building tension, which is a huge problem when nothing actually happens until the end. i was just bored. 2 1/2 skulls.

It really captures the classic 70s-80s horror vibes well. The twist is fun just wish it didn’t take so long to get to it. Still worth a watch.

Also, the friendship, caring, of bridging of class barriers between Donahue and Gerwig's characters make this a good film

The overall everyday feel of this film that is done in a way that is interesting, the muted tension, the punctuations of terror, great production as a period piece, and totally evil conclusion make this film amazing.
