American Passages reveals some of the cultural practices in society which finally resulted in the election of Donald Trump. At the same time the film is an impressive road-traveling collage of the United States in the era of the Obama administration. The film is ostensibly made to honour Robert Frank’s famed 1958 photo essay, ‘The Americans’. However, the viewer does not need a prior knowledge of that work to grasp Beckermann’s intentions. These are a to present a snapshot of American, to document debates around race, class and gender and map subjective geographies as a peripatetic anthropologist would.
