About this show

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Janette Oke, WHEN CALLS THE HEART stars Lori Loughlin (“Full House,” “90210”), Erin Krakow (“Army Wives”), Daniel Lissing (“Last Resort”) and Jack Wagner (“The Bold and the Beautiful,” “General Hospital,” “Melrose Place”). The series follows the story of young schoolteacher Elizabeth Thatcher (Krakow), who has just arrived to Coal Valley, a 19th century coal mining town in the Western Frontier, that is worlds apart from the wealthy, high-society life where she grew up. Elizabeth arrives in the aftermath of a mine explosion that claimed the lives of most of Coal Valley’s men, leaving behind their widows—including kind-hearted Abigail Stanton (Loughlin) who becomes friends with Mountie Bill Avery (Wagner) a forensic specialist who has been called to the town to help investigate the mining explosion. As Elizabeth adapts to the frontier lifestyle, she also warms up to handsome Constable Jack Thornton (Lissing).

So first of all, this series couldn't be further away from the original books if they tried. The only similarity is the name and that's fine if it means that its more interesting than the books but sadly that's not the case. The books have character progression and depth but it seems the only thing the creators of this series can do to keep their watchers is to NEVER let Jack and Elizabeth get married. That frustration is just ridiculous for me after 4 seasons and its starting to feel like pure manipulation now. It is actually possible to have interesting story lines with a married couple at the centre. Sorry but I will not watch any more seasons.

The last episode of Season 5 was the wishing tree a dream? It didn't make much sense seeing Jack return from the grave. The grief of losing him was sad enough.

Michael Landon Jnr does it again! Proving once more that quality entertainment need not involve actors having to sell their dignity, or screen writers having to over-indulge in vulgarity, or detailed physically intimate scenes that only end up insulting their audiences. WCTH is a smart, talented series with a classy cast.
