Hundreds of years in the future, in the last living colony on earth, an isolated city called New Babyl, twenty-four teenage candidates are chosen to take part in an annual entertainment competition known as The Exemplar. The beginning of this year’s competition coincides with a mysterious breach in the force field that protects the city from the outside world’s radiation.
Reeling from their monumental discovery, Aliyah and Bohdi continue their deep dive into hip-hop. While further exploring the hidden repository of past culture, Aliyah uncovers a connection between The Archive and her late mother. Meanwhile, Moore Times looks to use Bohdi’s new Exemplar status to his benefit by pressuring him into performing at a Reform sector block party.
Authority Phydra interrogates Bohdi and Aliyah about their recent hip-hop inspired performance, bent on rooting out what has influenced their newfound style. Gerald uses his status as a Tribunal member to pull Aliyah out of Authority questioning, but Bohdi is not as lucky, as he learns that coming from Reform comes with unexpected baggage.
Aliyah, Bohdi, Tempo, Sage, Brooklyn, Mags, and Apollo become obsessed with learning about hip-hop culture from The Archive, and as the group Exemplar round approaches, they begin to incorporate some of the new style into their performance. A quick trip to Reform sector opens Aliyah’s eyes to the inequality of New Babyl.
When Apollo finds blueprints for two cities beyond the shield, Bohdi, Aliyah, and Brooklyn join him on a trek to the edge of New Babyl to see for themselves what lies beyond. At the Tribunal, Phydra, reeling from Aliyah’s rebellious group Exemplar performance, devises a crackdown on those in reform who abetted the act of dissent.
In the aftermath of the Reform riots, the Tribunal seeks to co-opt the rebellious hip-hop music by demanding the Academy adopt a new state sanctioned hip-hop style. Reeling from her attack during the crackdown, Sage feeling unsafe, isolates herself from the others. As Bohdi searches for a missing Mags, Brooklyn is confronted with a genetic discovery that forces her to self-examine.
The Tribunal’s discovery of the burned Archive sets Authority Phydra on an investigation to seek out those connected to the fire. As the rift between Sage and Brooklyn grows, Sage turns her focus to Capoeira, channeling her fury into the combative dance style, while Brooklyn finds solace in a group that shares her new identity.
Aliyah, discovering there is more than a wasteland beyond the Shield, confronts her father, learning that Gerald has kept an earth-shattering secret from her for all these years. As the Exemplar semifinals approach, citizens of New Babyl begin to protest against the Authority’s unjust arrests, forcing Chancellor Diara to offer the Exemplars an incentive to toe the line, with the hope of influencing the population.
Bohdi and Aliyah learn of a covert group in New Babyl that share their desire to reveal the truth to the people. Aliyah brings a shocked Brooklyn, Apollo, and Mags up to speed about a new city called New Carthage, and the lie of New Babyl. All hell breaks loose when Authority Phydra learns there is a mole in the Tribunal.
As the Exemplar finals approach, Aliyah, Bohdi, and their friends plan a revolution to wake up the people to the lie of New Babyl. Tensions rise when Phydra makes a power move within the Tribunal, so that she can snuff out a potential uprising. Will Aliyah and Bohdi be able to convince New Babyl of the lie they’ve been living, or will Phydra catch them before they can share their message? When all hope seems lost, an important visitor returns to New Babyl…
