Set in Tel Aviv’s Judeo-Georgian community and performed in their unique dialect, Dover Kosashvili’s black comedy of arranged marriage shines a light on a rarely represented culture at war with itself. 32-year-old philosophy student Zaza (Lior Ashkenazi) endures endless attempts by his parents to marry him off within their insular community, all while secretly dating a divorced single mother, Judith (Ronit Elkabetz). When these two sides of his personality collide, all involved must choose between tradition and emotional authenticity. Alternately sexy and heartbreaking, Kosashvili’s perfectly judged dissection of parental authority and filial frailty is one of the best Israeli – or Georgian – films of the noughties.
