To paraphrase Joris Ivens in discussion with Chris Marker: One can never stop at the surface, no matter how attractive its form may be, because the way a current looks does not say anything about the river's nature.

Ivens asked Marker to write a commentary to this documentary about a Chilean port town. The Dutch filmmaker has significantly influenced the world of documentary filmmaking, not least Chris Marker. The film takes the form of a travelogue centred around Cuba’s post-revolutionary situation. A Valparaíso is characterised by excellent montage skills and innovative use of colour.
