100 Monsters (1968) is a horror film by Kimiyoshi Yasuda that explores the consequences of disrespecting the spirits of the dead. The film opens with a wealthy landowner, who plans to tear down a local shrine and surrounding homes to build a brothel. Despite protests from the community, Genzaburo is determined to proceed with his plans.During a Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai ceremony, a traditional Japanese storytelling event, Genzaburo invites his supporters to share stories about yōkai, supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore. The tales include a kasa-obake, an umbrella tsukumogami that can move on its own, and a rokurokubi, a woman whose neck extends at night. As the night progresses, tensions rise, and strange things start to happen. One of the guests is possessed by an evil spirit, and the group begins to see apparitions of yōkai around them.Despite the warnings of a local shrine maiden, the landowner decides to skip the purification ceremony at the end of the storytelling event, believing it to be a waste of time. His arrogance angers the spirits, and they retaliate by terrorizing Genzaburo and his supporters. The spirits take on the form of the yōkai from the stories, and the guests are scared to death or driven mad.The film's use of yōkai adds to the creepy atmosphere of the story. Yōkai are often depicted as mischievous or malevolent, and their inclusion in the film adds an otherworldly element to the horror. The kasa-obake, for example, is a seemingly harmless object that comes to life, while the rokurokubi appears as a beautiful woman but has a terrifying secret.100 Monsters also highlights the importance of respecting traditions and honoring the dead. Genzaburo's disrespect for the shrine and refusal to perform the purification ceremony show his lack of regard for the spirits and the customs of the community.
