Leading up to Mother's Day, the team must survive Lent and are forced to give up more than just cigarettes and sugar. A thief has been pinching their milk as well. With some covert spying, Fred and Sister Monica Joan are able to catch the thief - glamorous, shop-soiled Tina, a young woman with chipped nail varnish and layered make-up. She pleads with Sisters Julienne and Monica Joan, explaining that she's been stealing milk for her pregnancy. Sister Julienne wants to help Tina and encourages her to come to clinic where they can help provide everything she needs, so she won't have to keep stealing milk. Tina turns out to be rather a good storyteller: she claims this is her first pregnancy, but Shelagh discovers her episiotomy scar, prompting Tina to confess that she already has a son, but he lives with his father in America. She is also confirmed to have a venereal disease, which brings her into the care of the maternity home. As Sister Julienne learns more about Tina, she is convinced that this woman needs help to become the mother she wants to be.

Sister Julienne volunteers Nonnatus House to take part in a training initiative to help doctors with an obstetrics diploma. Dr Turner and Sister Julienne hope the exercise will remind the council how vital Nonnatus House is to the community and avoid the threat of demolition. The young doctors cause a lot of excitement but end up causing Sister Julienne to lose her temper. This may not be the success she had hoped for. On his rounds, Fred comes across a street marked for demolition, but one house clearly shows signs of life. The sound of a cough leads him to the flat of 60-year-old George, who doesn't want to leave behind his beloved pigeon, Dot.

Sister Frances is at a loss when she cares for diabetic and recovering cancer patient Albert Calthorpe, whose capable wife Grace refuses to accept further help despite having to care for her husband, her elderly, mother and a daughter who has a three-year-old and is about to have another baby. Nurse Crane and Sister Hilda become involved with an anxious new father, Ronald. Determined to be there for the birth of his first born, Ronald gets on Nurse Crane's nerves during the delivery. It is Sister Hilda who tactfully encourages Ronald to open up about his own childhood and get to the bottom of his motivations. Meanwhile, Violet is given two tickets to the new hit musical The Sound of Music, but as Fred is not interested in the film, Violet decides to raffle them off with all proceeds going to the incubator fund. Sister Monica Joan tries several times to win the tickets but is disappointed with each go. She soon concocts a plan to convince the sceptical Sister Julienne that perhaps a trip to the cinema might benefit the whole of Nonnatus House.

Trixie helps to prepare a blind mother, Marion, to care for her new baby, but Marion's sister, Beryl, calls Social Services to intervene. Beryl feels very strongly that Marion's blindness will prevent her from caring properly for her baby, even with the support of her husband Stewart. About this show

A moving, intimate, funny and, above all, true-to-life look at the colorful stories of midwifery and families in East London from the Fifties, based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth. When Jenny Lee first arrives in Poplar, she knows nothing about hardship, poverty or indeed, life itself. Attached to an order of nursing nuns at Nonnatus House, Jenny is part of a team of midwives who visit expectant mothers, providing the poorest women with the best possible care.

Ok sorry to google play and everything. But buyers out there if your seriously considering buying this show or anything else, be sure that it works. I love Call the Midwife and have nothing against the producers of the show. But I've bought it on Google play and it won't 'play' and load. And I was unware of there returns policy and I believe I wasn't entirely made to understand it when I purchased this show. So now unfortunately I'm stuck with a show that doesn't work and one that can't be returned (*I emailed returns).

Takes me back to a time in my childhood where life was so simple and uncomplicated. Our parents had come through the war with their young family and hard work coupled with life in the 50s. Love this programme so much😍
