Bill Murray seems woefully miscast in this production as the philosophical drifter from Maugham's novel. But he's actually not bad compared to the actress who played Isabel. Her performance was incredibly weak and made the love affair between the two leads seem implausible. I haven't watched the whole film yet, as it did not really appeal to me, but what I have seen is a very poor adaptation of the novel, which is cheesy enough in its own right.

Being cast the lead for this film was a condition that Bill Murray fixed before he would sign to do the Ghost Busters sequal. The entire cast does an excellent job with the material. The film was Bill Murray's first attempt to be seen as a serious actor. The critics said that Bill Murray had no place in the world of non comedic cinema. The mans track record in films since the Razors Edge was made speaks for itself. Bill Murray is one of the worlds great actors. This film is well worth the effort.
