The Beach House

The Beach House

Directed by Jeffrey A. Brown

Escaping to his family’s beach house to reconnect, Emily and Randall find their off-season trip interrupted by Mitch and Jane Turner, an older couple acquainted with Randall’s estranged father. Unexpected bonds form as the couples let loose and enjoy the isolation, but it all takes an ominous turn as increasingly strange environmental phenomena begin to warp their peaceful evening. As the effects of an infection become evident, Emily struggles to make sense of the contagion before it’s too late. A SHUDDER ORIGINAL.

A couple's beach getaway turns terrifying when an environmental contagion takes hold.

Cast: Liana Liberato, Noah Le Gros, Jake Weber, Maryann Nagel

Good. This was my first film on Shudder, and I've been a member since.

This movie starts off slow and promising, but then takes a nose dive into Lovecraftian oblivion. The cast is great, and it's disappointing to not see them directed better and with a stronger writer for this film. You feel the tension build at a certain point, and you get excited for what's to come, but the juice isn't worth the squeeze as the Lovecraftian theme becomes nothing more than an abstract bland lazy shadow over the entire film. At one point, one of the better characters just randomly dips out of the movie (literally swims to ocean Narnia) and he is never brought back again for a surprise, or further character development, or had any meaningful impact to the other characters. TLDR, skip and watch The Mist instead.

Pretty good. Slow start, some cool Lovecraftian critters, some bad make-up. It's a mixed bag. But the script strives for intelligence - even if the environmental message is a bit too blunt - and an unsettling ending. Worth a watch.

The movie is a little slow, and the acting has some awkward spots. The sound design is great though, and the directing has some stand out shots. A couple of really nice looking scenes, and some neat visual style. Once things start happening the movie does a good job of being unsettling, and gives a nice little dose of body horror. Unfortunately, it just kind of ends without any kind of good wrap up.
