The Babadook

The Babadook

Directed by Jennifer Kent

Six years after the death of her husband, Amelia struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old Samuel – a son she finds difficult to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. And when Amelia begins to see glimpses of the creature herself, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may well be real.

People getting hella worked up over the acting and the “dumb scares,” but if an actor makes you live or hate them, most of the time it’s cuz they did their job correctly. This movie is more of a psychological horror than a supernatural one. It’s essentially a warning not to ignore your traumas and just stuff em down or else they can control you. It also serves as a metaphor to live with your inner demons instead of wasting your sanity trying to banish them. Might seem stupid, but the movie materializes true horror: depression and denial. This is an absolutely fantastic movie, and has become one of the 2010’s all-time horror classics that people will remember. The movie is essentially a warning

This is one we will talk about as a classic for years to come. Easily one of my favorite horror films. The characters are miserable and unbearable - because the acting is great. I feel like this is kind of a domestic horror as well as psychological. This is a film about the shadows of our emotions personified. If you are into slow-burns that hit a nerve with real-life depictions of family, this is for you.
