Night of the Living Dead

Night of the Living Dead

Directed by George Romero

George Romero's original zombie classic introduced viewers to a new type of terror: the walking dead, slow moving, but determined to feast on your flesh! From the first moments of its iconic opening sequence, NOTLD changed the game for horror directors, creating a genre that - like the zombies themselves - still shows no sign of slowing down. But Romero's most brilliant and controversial innovation was casting African-American actor Duane Jones as the lead, and offering a devastating - and still relevant - commentary on racism during the film's final moments.

Having seen this on in the background of many horror movies make me feel like I'm in a horror movie when I watch it.

Night of the Living Dead is widely known as being the film that depicts the first iteration of the modern zombie. Watching this movie for the first time, I found myself wondering how far they would go with it. How many zombie rules did they know back then? Would biting spread the infection and do they even eat people to begin with? I was SHOCKED at how similar the zombies in this movie are to zombies in recent media. They knew it all! Hearing at the start of the movie that the little girl was bitten, it made me wonder how far they go. And WOW did they not disappoint. The scene at the end of the movie where she turns and murders her own mother has to be one of the most shocking kills I've ever seen in any movie. The editing in that scene alone may be the closest I've been to being actually scared by a movie in a LONG time. I was also surprised by the amount of political commentary this film contains. This movie was released during a very divisive time in America's history and it took some pretty bold risks in its storytelling. Specifically, their decision to have a black protagonist. I found myself rooting for him throughout the entire movie and was deeply saddened by his death scene. A tragic reflection of the real life horrors that black people in America were faced with at the time. This is a movie that has stood the test of time and even far surpasses the zombie movies of today. This movie's known for introducing the most popular monster since the vampire. George Romero's Night of the Living Dead is historical.
