Three friends find happiness as they build a life during the few years between Germany's defeat in World War I and the rise of the Nazi party in this poignant classic. Disillusioned German soldiers Erich, Otto and Gottfried (Robert Taylor, Franchot Tone and Robert Young) return home after the Armistice and open an auto repair shop. There, they meet Pat Hollman (Margaret Sullavan), the girlfriend of a wealthy motorist. The four become inseparable ... for a time. But Pat's tuberculosis and the violent Nazi putsch end their all-too-brief happiness.
