Judge Charles Coleman (Taye Diggs) and his paramedic wife, Eve are thrown into turmoil when their 20-year-old son CJ is finally given permission to drive the Judge’s pride BMW. On his way to enter the Police Academy, CJ is enjoying the luxury car while calmly driving within the limit like a police recruit should. Nearing the Academy, two White police officers, Clements and Carter, spot CJ, a young Black man driving the expensive BMW. For Clements and Carter, the BMW and young driver mean he either stole the car or is dealing drugs. They switch on their lights. CJ pulls over. Knowing his rights, CJ asks the two cops why he was stopped. No nonsense, the cops demand to see his license. Complying with the request, CJ reaches for his bag. In that instant, Clements gets nervous and yells “Gun.” Carter shoots first. A second later Clement joins in a barrage of lead that takes the life from CJ’s young body. But there’s no gun in CJ’s car. Carter retrieves a rogue gun from the police cruiser to plant. The paramedics arrive. CJ’s mom Eve is confronted by every mother’s worst nightmare. Her dead son. Shock envelopes the Coleman family with Charles and Eve unable to process what’s happened. They know CJ didn’t have a gun and there wasn’t one in the car. Charles assures Eve the system will bring justice. Charles finds out officer Carter has several similar shootings on his record. He’s clearly a bad cop. But with the careers of two White officers on the line, the legal system works against justice. The DA refuses to bring charges, the evidence of a gun in CJ’s car, is enough to exonerate the cops. Charles must confront all he holds dear as justice will be denied his family. Charles’ friend on the force, Detective Horace (John Cusack), worries Charles may take the law into his own hands and confronts him. Enlisting the aid of a Javier (George Lopez) who has also lost someone to officer Carter’s bullets, Charles’ vendetta begins.
