Laurence Harvey and the legendary Kim Novak star as in this adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage. Philip Carey (Harvey), a club-footed artist who decides to pursue a medical career after two unsuccessful years in Paris, meets waitress Mildred Rogers (Novak) and falls in love. However, Rogers takes advantage of Carey's affections, then marries another man. Heartbroken, Carey continues his studies and begins a relationship with a writer (Siobhan McKenna); however, Carey breaks off the relationship following the return of a pregnant and abandoned Mildred. Mildred again leaves Carey to have an affair with his best friend. Phillip becomes a doctor whilst Mildred continues her downward spiral into prostitution, poverty and the loss of her child. And despite everything, Phillip still loves her.
