During their summer on the French Riviera, a hedonistic teenager, Cecile (Jean Seberg), gladly accommodates the sexual dalliances of her wealthy playboy father, Raymond (David Niven). But when Raymond's mistress, Elsa (Mylène Demongeot), becomes the unexpected casualty of the arrival of Cecile's godmother, Anne (Deborah Kerr), life at the villa is upended. Unwilling to succumb to Raymond's advances without marriage, Anne gets him to propose. Yet, hoping for a return to their carefree lifestyle, Cecile wants to bring Elsa back into their lives. But upon catching Raymond in the arms of another woman, Anne bolts and, following a tragic accident, leaves father and daughter questioning the shallow and immoral behavior that has left them struggling with guilt and sadness.
