  When Nancy learns that her check has bounced for Shane's karate lessons, she pays in cash, while at home she struggles to pay bills the same way. Meanwhile, teenage son Silas is upset because his girlfriend has been sent away to a Mexican reform school by her mother Celia. Silas thinks his girlfriend didn't say goodbye because the phone has been disconnected for lack of payment. Nancy meets with Doug Wilson, her accountant, and regular pot customer, who suggests she establish a cover business to launder her drug money and at the same time he orders a big stash from her for his regular five-man poker game. In the kitchen of her pot supplier, Heylia, along with Conrad and Vaneeta, Nancy requests weed on credit but Heylia wants collateral and takes her Range Rover. Nancy returns home to find Shane watching old family videos of his dead father, while she also attempts to comfort Silas, who's broken hearted.  When Shane takes a fall, Nancy can’t dial 911 from her shut-off phone, and they race to the hospital.  In the emergency room, the boys watch their mother, who has no insurance, pay in cash again. At Heylia's, Nancy is once again forced to ask for more weed on credit and, as collateral, Heylia takes Nancy's cherished wedding ring. Meanwhile, Celia confronts Helen Chin, the club tennis pro who has been giving Celia's husband Dean more than just tennis lessons.

  Nancy arrives at Doug's office with his weekly weed stash only to find he has no interest in buying from her because he has gotten himself a medical marijuana card from "the clinic" and has all the pot he needs. Nancy makes a trip to the clinic and adjacent "pot store," where she sees a wide array of marijuana-infused delicacies from hash brownies to muffins – which sparks an idea. At Heylia's, Nancy demands a higher grade weed to compete on the street, which, of course, costs more money. Meanwhile, Silas has an encounter with Megan Beals, a deaf girl he goes to school with, who has a bad reputation. At the same time, Shane, armed with a BB gun, has put a raw steak in the backyard to ambush a mountain lion seen roaming the neighborhood. Later that night, with recipe guidance from Conrad, Nancy cooks up batches of yummy weed-laced goodies like "potcorn" and other treats. Meanwhile, Celia humiliates her daughter Isabel by substituting her chocolate stash with laxatives. Dean becomes extremely upset with Celia and insists that her cruel stunt borders on child abuse, but Celia says the trick was designed to prove a point about her daughter Isabel's weight gain. But in the end, Isabel gets revenge on her mom. Nancy delivers her basket of pot powered pastries to Doug and the boys and makes a pitch to become the exclusive provider of the pot pantry for their poker parties. Nancy's "cover business" is born. She'll become an independent baker. Doug is especially "high" on the idea. With the proceeds from her first baking success, Nancy pays back Heylia, but her indebtedness doesn’t end there.

  A blaring smoke alarm jolts Nancy and the boys out of bed, tripped by her drifter brother-in-law Andy whom she discovers in the kitchen preparing a surprise gourmet breakfast. Nancy’s none too pleased by Andy’s presence, especially as it looks like his stay may be indefinite. Now with Andy always hanging around the kitchen, Nancy can’t cook up her pot pastries, so Vaneeta turns her on to the Candyman, a baker who "mixes it with bud and makes the world taste good." Doug and Nancy meet a going-out-of-business restaurant, where he encourages her to take over the space to front her “"egitimate" business – a bakery. Nancy overhears Andy giving twisted sex advice to Silas and immediately orders him out of the house. But when Andy busts Nancy as a pot dealer and weed baker it suddenly it looks like Andy might stay. Meanwhile, in a way only Celia can, she reveals to Dean that she has cancer.

  Nancy’s son Shane sees the school therapist for taking his anger out for being known as "Weirdo" or "strange Botwin" while Celia meets with a faith healer to treat her breast cancer. In an uncharacteristic move, Celia then proceeds to give all her clothes away. At Heylia's house, Nancy confesses that Conrad's car was damaged by a falling trunk in her garage and he says she'll have to pay for it. Suddenly a hail of bullets hit Heylia’s house and all hit the deck. Andy wants in on Nancy's business which she immediately rejects, causing Andy to visit Conrad and Heylia to get into the pot business on his own. With his first buy, Andy gets busted by a bicycle cop. Nancy and Andy meet with a hippie, pot smoking, liberal lawyer to strategize his case. After having given her clothes away and now all the furniture in her house, Celia's new-found don't-care-what-other-people-think attitude, allows her to indulge in a feast of junk food with her daughter. Later, Celia and Shane have a bonding moment over their perceived weirdness.
