The Heiress
Available on Prime Video
The Heiress follows the story of two cousins who live together in a modern day, rural British village. We learn that they are descended from a line of strong females who had occult leanings. While they would not be considered 'witches', in British parlance, their ancestors would have been called 'cunning women' or simply 'wise women'. In the age of modernity their ancestors and their mystic arts are all but forgotten. When we first meet our protagonist, Claire, her epilepsy has worsened, possibly brought on by the death of her grandmother Abigail, beloved by all the family. Claire's cousin and flatmate, Anna offers almost guardian-like guidance to Claire, caring for her as Claire's illness begins to debilitate her. Anna also has her own issues with her alpha male boyfriend Dan who seeks to dominate in his relationships. Whilst Anna cares deeply about Claire she also subdues and mothers her. Claire's mental and physical health worsen and she sees visions during her fits and ghostly masked figures in the house. She also begins to experience blackouts. Claire's father insists Claire see a psychiatrist, but Claire takes her mother's advice and sees a priest. As the visions grow more intense the priest and the psychiatrist compete in an effort to gain control of her. Anna discovers she is pregnant and immediately experiences discomfort. Especially when she's not with Claire. The family are relieved when Claire is finally sectioned and medicated. But whatever is haunting her is very real indeed, and now has free reign. Furthermore, its target isn't Claire, it's Anna's unborn male child. Claire must engage with Lilith, an ancient female spirit who performed services for her great grandmother in return for possession of her descendants. She realises that whilst she is alive she stands between Lilith and Anna. Ultimately she must find the strength to be Anna's guardian in a reversal of roles.
