In 2001, a dismembered corpse is found floating in Galveston Bay, Texas and police arrest Robert Durst for the murder of his neighbour; in 2012, Robert Durst reaches out to filmmakers Andrew Jarecki and Marc Smerling and agrees to be interviewed.

Durst reveals details about his childhood including witnessing his mother's suicide and recalls how he was pressured to join his father's business; in 1982, Robert makes a report to police that his wife has gone missing.

In 2000, a tip leads a district attorney to re-open the investigation into the disappearance of Kathie Durst; investigators begin to focus on Durst's close friend, Susan Berman, a witness who was overlooked in 1982; Susan Berman is found murdered.

In 2003, Galveston, Texas, becomes a media circus as the press descends to cover the trial of Robert Durst; Durst's legal team decides to make an unusual plea; Robert is put on the witness stand.

In the 33 years since her disappearance, family and friends of Kathie Durst continue to hunt for the truth about what happened to her.

The series concludes after nearly a decade of investigating Robert Durst and his alleged crimes, and discussing the cases with dozens of individuals, including family, friends, police, lawyers, jurors and journalists.
