About this show

In the sweeping frontier drama 'When Calls the Heart,' the town of Hope Valley adjusts to the changing times – while still maintaining the small-town bonds that connect them. The series follows single mother Elizabeth Thornton, Hope Valley’s beloved schoolteacher who navigates life alone when her husband is suddenly killed on duty. Other central characters include Rosemary Coulter, the town’s lovable busybody once described as 'part Broadway showgirl, part Frontier woman,' and her patient husband, the upstanding businessman Leland Coulter. Sheriff Bill Avery works hard to protect the town and to cement his position as Hope Valley’s ultimate authority, and Dr. Carson Shepherd keeps Hope Valley healthy all while negotiating his own personal challenges in life and love. New to the community are Mountie Nathan Grant and mysterious gambler Lucas Bouchard. Finally, Elizabeth will continue to teach the children of Hope Valley – and although there are potential suitors interested in her, the only relationship she is focused on is the one with her baby. The series is inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West.

Had to change my review from 2015. I had given this show 5 stars but its currently 2019 and I have to say this show started out so wonderful but they cant seem to keep actors. So many wonderful storylines just stop with no reason given. I would fall in love with characters and their stories many times over only to have them disappear. I just lost interest. A real bummer cuz the show is so clean so I felt comfortable watching it with my kids.

Great easy watch. Interesting points of view about the industries that built the Northwest. Drama can be a bit corny, but the lessons of community and God are nice. The main love story is one of faith, strength in friendship and true partnership. They also challenge each others beliefs, which makes for a truer sense of relationship. The only criticisms are that season 1 to 2 storylines didn't play out story lines that were prominent. Some actors are far older than character line suggests.

After the season 7 finale, with the embrace felt 'round the world, fans were ready to finally begin the married life stories of the rugged Mountie and teacher. We kept waiting for the normal story arc to bring the heronie to seek forgiveness for her mistakes and unbecoming behavior. We now know we were strung along for the past three years merely as pawns in the rating scheme. We feel used. Where else does the hero not get the girl?
