About this show

Home Fires follows a group of inspirational women in a rural English community where the shadow of World War II is casting a dark cloud over their lives. The isolated village couldn’t feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields and yet it is not immune from the effects of war. As the conflict takes hold, and separates the women from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers, the women find themselves under increasing and extraordinary pressures in a rapidly fragmenting world. Inspired by the book Jambusters, Julie Summers’ enthralling history of the Women’s Institute in WWII, the six-part series stars acclaimed actresses Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey) and Francesca Annis (Reckless) as bitter rivals, as well as Clare Calbraith (Downton Abbey), Ruth Gemmell (Fever Pitch), Claire Rushbrook (Whitechapel), and Ed Stoppard (Upstairs, Downstairs).

This series has beautiful cinematography. The actors are superb. The stories are absorbing. These are women working for the war effort and overcoming obstacles of their time, while holding down the home front while their men at off to serve Britain in World War II. I enjoyed every minute of this amazing series.

It takes you back in time but also shows how some problems in our lives and traditional roles have not changed. Regardless of the country in times of war responding as women in our differences we are all the same.

This was a great series, to my surprise, even my husband watched every episode till the last one. I think men, just as well as women would enjoy watching this series. Took place in London, during WWII, where the women worked the fields as well as the German prisoners. I DO NOT LIKE MINISERIES, but this one had me hooked, right from the start!!
