1 The Dolls

We are in Naples in the 1950s. Elena and Lila, two very different little girls, get to know one another by playing together. And one afternoon, as they play, a friendship destined to last an entire lifetime is born.

2 The Money

Elena and Lila discover the pleasures of reading, and decide they want to become writers when they grow up. But their families are poor and uneducated, and have no intention of letting them study. After countless arguments with her parents, Elena manages to get permission to go to Secondary School, while Lila is forced to abandon her studies.

3 Metamorphoses

Elena continues her studies, but finds it difficult to obtain good grades. Lila, though she has ended up working in her father's shoe factory, manages to help her with Latin and ends up overshadowing her when everyone in the neighbourhood realises that Lila is the girl who has read every single book in the local library.

4 Dissolving Boundaries

Lila's beauty flourishes and all the boys in the neighbourhood approach her, including Marcello Solara, whom she utterly rejects, and Stefano Carracci, whose behaviour is in stark contrast to his father's. As a boyfriend Elena finds a classmate with no particular qualities, while dreaming of Nino Sarratore.

5 The Shoes

While Elena is set to leave Gino, Lila designs an original and very modern pair of shoes together with her brother. Their father, however, has no intention of putting his trust in her. Marcello, who's in love with Lila, manages to win the trust first of Rino and then of Fernando Cerullo, and ends up asking for Lila's hand.

6 The Island

In Ischia, Elena bumps into the Sarratores, eventually becoming close with Nino, with whom she manages to exchange a chaste kiss on the beach. But on the day of her 15th birthday, Donato Sarratore, Nino's father, throws himself on her and gives her a passionate kiss. Elena runs away from the island, troubled and terrified.

7 The Fiances

Lila becomes engaged to be married to Stefano, who decides to invest in Lila's shoe design and form a partnership with the Cerullos.

8 The Promise

The Cerullo shoes are not selling and Stefano asks the Solaras for help. This almost makes the wedding plans fall through, but Elena - who in the meantime is writing an article commissioned to her by Nino - patches things up. But at the wedding Elena discovers that the article was never published, while Marcello turns up wearing the first pair of shoes created by Lila; the pair Stefano kept as a treasure.
