When two police officers are sent to a house following a report of a disturbance, they stumble upon a truly horrific scene. A young woman is unconscious, bleeding from a head wound. Hiding in the cellar is her husband, ready to wield a knife at anyone who tries to enter. What happens next leaves one of the officers dead and the other fighting for their career.

However, his determination to prove their involvement brings him into conflict with DS Annie Cabbot. Soon Annie has begun an affair with the art expert on the investigation, Mark Keane; has she crossed the line?

With DC Kevin Templeton a second alleyway murder victim, finding the killer becomes personal for DCI Banks and his team. When Timothy Randall - initially arrested for the murder of Hayley Daniels - is cleared, Banks finds his investigation back at square one. Meanwhile, Annie tries to push a connection between her original investigation and the murder of DC Templeton, but is largely shot down. Yet unknown to both officers, there is a traitor amongst them and as Templeton's murderer is finally uncovered, the case forces a highly personal revelation from Annie.

Banks gets lucky and finds Emily living with a dangerous drug dealer. As Banks tries to persuade Emily to come home, an armed robbery in Eastvale has turned into a murder investigation but DS Annie Cabbot struggles to identify any suspects. When a battered body is found in an Eastvale nightclub, the shocking identity of the victim leads Banks and Annie to a devastating realization about both cases.

With Emily Rydell dead, apparently brutally beaten, DCI Banks quickly finds himself at the heart of a murder investigation with any number of suspects. When a surveillance operation establishes a clear link between the murder of Charles McKay and dealer Barry Clough, Banks and Annie realise that the two cases must be connected. Their investigation uncovers a conspiracy pointing to one of their own team being a criminal informer. But as Banks pushes all the suspects hard, the case threatens to undermine his own integrity as an officer and brings his relationship with Annie to breaking point.

I think I have written before but every time I watch Annie makes me feel so annoyed by her unnecessary presence. The show is great!

someone should do a compilation of DCI Banks everytime he punches someone or looks longingly at Annie. i just love him and this series
