McSteed, writing a book on Black Jamie, the 13th Laird of Castle De'Ath, and Emma, a member of Aborcashata (Advisory Bureau on Refurbishing Castles and Stately Homes as Tourist Attractions), arrive in Scotland at the invitation of a cousin of the 35th Laird. The vibrating brandy in Steed's glass at dinner and the implements of torture that Emma finds in the dungeons give them clues to the mysterious goings-on at Castle De'Ath.

When Steed suspects that a group of Gentleman's Gentlemen are operating a spy-ring that is gaining vital defense secrets he decides to join the 'club'. Meanwhile, Emma employs her female charms to test one of the suspects - and almost suffers a fate worse than death in the process! With the help of an ancient General, the two agents finally discover what the butler really saw.

Emma believes she is a woman of property, but discovers too late that she is the prisoner of a monstrous machine created by a dead man. While she struggles to fight her way out of the imprisoning house, encountering on the way a panorama of her past, Steed tries to reach her in time for rescue.

When economist James Broom is murdered, his visionary Europa Plan is threatened and The Avengers are called in to investigate. Lectures at a University during Rag Week lead Emma to dress as Robin Hood and Steed as the Sheriff of Nottingham. After encountering three Friar Tucks, they unmask the killers and save the Plan.

The world of commerce is suddenly threatened by the murder of ten city business men and an anxious Ministry sends The Avengers to investigate. Steed acquires a secretary and Emma a bracelet, both of which have fatal charms, before they uncover a cell of lethal suffragettes

When agent Ronny Westcott dies of bullet wounds in Steed's flat, The Avengers take over his assignment to protect a Middle Eastern Prince who has come to London to sign an important oil contract. As they discover a Quite Quite Fantastic plot, Steed relives the Arabian Nights and Emma develops a taste for honey before being sold to protect the Prince.
