1 Farrell Wine
1/26/16
On Shay Mountain in the Appalachian backwoods, Foster Farrell VI, aka "Big Foster," is preparing to succeed his mother, Lady Ray, as the Bren'in, the all-powerful head of the Farrell clan. Needing yeast for a new batch of storied "Farrell wine" to celebrate his coronation, Big Foster opts for an early exercise of power and orders a "run" into town. While Lady Ray disapproves of the raid, the frightened manager of the store they ransacked refuses to press charges. Though Blackburg Deputy Sheriff Wade Houghton wholeheartedly agrees, he's caught off guard when, at the behest of the coal company that owns Shay Mountain, Sheriff Weinke orders him to post an eviction notice removing the family from the home where they’ve lived for centuries. Unable to read the notice, Lady Ray looks for help from Asa Farrell, a cousin who's been locked in a wooden box for six months as punishment for leaving ten years ago. When Asa says that the state wants them off their land, Lady Ray suspects he's the answer to a prophecy that foretold the return of a new Bren'in to Shay Mountain. So at the celebration where Big Foster is waiting, Lady Ray stuns him when she refuses to relinquish her authority. Dismissing her superstitions, Big Foster vows to take what's rightfully his. Dragging Asa from his cell, he and his men head into town to steal guns from a coal plant watchman's house, only to be forced to run when the angry neighbors open fire and kill Big Foster's eight-year-old son, Elon. Meanwhile, Hasil Farrell is approached by Butch, a local drug dealer who wants to buy some of the family's legendary wine. Needing someone to blame, Big Foster directs his anger at Asa, ordering him to leave and never come back. When Lady Ray disagrees with his plan to fight the eviction with a show of force, Big Foster snaps, smothering her and leaving her in a coma. Though Asa hitchhikes off Shay Mountain, once he gets another look at the outside world he left behind, he returns to face his destiny. Meanwhile, after drinking the moonshine he and a friend bought from Butch, the teenage son of a coal company executive goes insane and stabs his father to death, leaving Houghton to handle a murder investigation along with the eviction. Finding that two bottles are missing, Big Foster accuses Hasil of stealing them and cuts off two fingers as punishment. Finally, as the grieving Farrell clan prepares for what's to come, Big Foster is angered to see that Asa is back. © 2016 Sony Pictures Television Inc. and Tribune Entertainment Company, LLC.
