The Tunnel

In the dead of night, out at sea, a Syrian boy (FARID) and two other stowaways cower on the deck of a trawler. Terrified, the refugee children watch as a gas-masked man boards their boat, pours petrol over it and sets it alight. When KARL and BB find a toy car among the blackened debris, Karl’s determined to find the children, despite new boss WINNIE’s directive that it is the French police’s problem. Karl arrives in Calais to find ELISE has given up her role as commander to smarmy ASTOR CHAPUT... In the Eurotunnel, an engineer is sent to fix faulty lights, but finds herself engulfed by a tsunami of frenzied rats while, on the Kent coast, HELENA CARVER goes to wake up her children, only to find the refugee children in their beds. Elise starts to piece together the child swap and the plague of rats and the story that links them. The Carver children have vanished, but in Karl and Elise's increasingly desperate search, they find another boy: CHARLIE MOREAU. In a bleak UK immigration removal centre, heavily pregnant MANU hears a noise coming from a laundry bin. Inside, she finds ISLA, THEO and BEA with a toy TV, playing a disturbing animation - starring the Pied Piper. Manu takes the children onto a balcony to use them as leverage to remain in the UK. Can KARL persuade Manu not to harm the children, or herself? Meanwhile, the reappearance of Charlie Moreau continues to cause shockwaves, not least among his shattered family. ELISE’s determination to atone for her mistake is cemented. Elise notices a demand embedded in the animation: ‘Find Saban Khasanovic’. Meanwhile, tense and fidgety ANTON visits LANA in her shabby caravan. How are they connected? BB is chuffed when he is partnered up with LOUISE – unfortunately for him, their mission is to find the person who put the rats into the tunnel. Can BB keep his phobia under wraps? Elsewhere, LAWRENCE TAYLOR is amazed to discover that a video of him dancing with a doughnut has gone viral – not least because he neither recorded nor posted it… The French and English teams urgently pool their discoveries and theories. Early morning mist rolls over the land as a naked man runs for his life; elsewhere, on a deserted beach, another naked man weeps. Fractured memories torment the men – LANA in a basque and gas mask, and ANTON with a butcher’s knife, performing a shocking, ritualistic crime. Meanwhile, restaurateur JEAN-MARC offends his son’s fiancée SALMA. Loving son FRANCOIS defends his dad’s clumsiness, but Jean-Marc is conspicuous by his absence at the engagement party. Why is this marriage causing Jean-Marc such heartache? The search for Saban steps up when WINNIE is sent a live rat, with a set of co-ordinates leading to the Pied Piper’s latest victim: Lawrence Taylor. With all avenues exhausted, Elise tries out the drug that the Pied Piper used on the other victims. Karl’s disapproval soon turns to concern when the trip goes bad, and he learns the extent of her distress over the Moreau case. Up on the white cliffs of Dover, LOUISE finds an abandoned bloody bayonet. She calls BB’s mobile – only to hear his ringtone sounding from beyond the cliff edge... Meanwhile, in her cosy seaside home, SHIRLEY hears the sound of the front door. Shirley is blind, and we see what Shirley cannot: LANA is in her house. Anton’s sister KIKI tells KARL and ELISE about Anton’s website, where ANTON and Lana have posted appeals for mother and son respectively. The twisted truth of their folie à deux hits home for Karl and he secretly messages Lana via the website – will she take the bait? Meanwhile, Elise lets JACQUES sleep on her couch, much to Karl’s disapproval… Karl and Elise visit refugee charity worker EDITH who reveals that Saban died – but is she telling the truth? CHAPUT suspends Elise on the spot when he finds out about the Moreau case reconstruction. Elise knows that Karl’s interference is instrumental in her suspension and Elise vents her anger at his betrayal. Can the two find a way to reconcile? © 2017 Kudos.

A summer morning, and young mum CLAIRE plays happily in the park with toddler ALICE. Their game takes a dark turn when Alice finds her pushchair overturned - but no sign of her mum… OLIVIER tears a strip off CHAPUT for suspending Elise and wrests control of the Moreau investigation. Chaput’s father JOSEF headed up the original case, and ordered Chaput to overlook the hotel in the Baie de Somme. The reason worries Chaput, but Josef is unflappable. KARL finally comes face to face with Saban – now known as FRANCOIS. Karl tries to persuade adoptive dad JEAN-MARC to tell the truth, but he promised his dead wife he’d never tell. Karl finds blood at Elise’s apartment, and a series of menacing messages from JACQUES MOREAU. What has he done with Elise? Maya and KAYLA get drunk and Kayla confronts LEO about posting the naked pictures, but he still won’t admit it. Kayla seeks solace in drink and drugs and has a seizure. Maya confides in Karl and LAURA that she was the one who posted the photos. Meanwhile, BB discovers a worrying detail amongst a raft of missing person reports. © Kudos 2017

KARL arrives at Samphire Hoe to find ELISE in a locked collar bomb. ANTON directs Karl to a detonator and explains that 11 innocent people are being gassed. To save them, Karl can press the button and open the truck door. However, the button also detonates the collar bomb. Karl is paralysed by his dilemma, but Elise knows exactly what to do. LANA and Anton escape the showdown to enact a suicide pact by driving off the white cliffs, Karl smashes his car into theirs to foil their attempt. Karl shows Lana proof that Saban is alive. Lana realises that Anton lied to her and she shoots him. She begs Karl to let her see Saban but he will only give her photos of him. Karl presents JEAN-MARC with a birth certificate for FRANCOIS that names Jean-Marc and his wife as Francois’ birth parents: Francois now truly belongs to them. Closure comes in the Moreau case when ASTOR CHAPUT is forced to confront the uncomfortable truth. © 2017 Kudos.
