The mini-series follows the history of the Roman Empire, from approximately the death of Marcellus (24/23 BC) to Claudius' own death in 54 AD. As Claudius narrates his life, we witness Augustus' attempts to find an heir, often foiled by his wife Livia who wants her son Tiberius to become emperor. We also see the conspiracy of Sejanus, the infamous reign of Caligula, and Claudius' own troubled period of rule.

I. Claudius, produced in 1976 by the BBC from Robert Graves's book, is a little bit dated these days, but if features fantastic performances from Derek Jacobi, John Hurt, Sian Phillips, and the inimitable Brian Blessed, telling a deliciously twisted tale of betrayal, scheming and murder at the highest levels of ancient Roman society. For only $10 it's an absolute steal. It was listed by Time Magazine is one of the 100 best television series of all time in 2007.

This series is cheap because the video quality is appalling. When I started watching it I felt cheated.
