I am writing to say that in watching Fleabag I found myself throughout drawn in to empathise deeply with each episode and its trajectory. From my first encounter with this English series on Australia's ABC TV Fleabag stimulated me to reflect on its characters and their interactions, driving me to better engage it through repeated viewing. I found a social relevance; an acuteness and honesty of portrayal in this film and its characters stretching from the principle character, her family and (dead) best friend, the alcoholic, the priest, and indeed up to and including the fox! For me, that the film studies character in a way which both transcends and is more basic than sex, or gender, makes it a deeply human and humane story. I find it a boldly refreshing, clean-hearted and clear eyed discussion emphasising the complex over the contradictory, nature of love-itself. This is achieved throughout by flawless film-work and by its deeply convincing portrayal of character. The film exposed in me a thirst for understanding its characters and story I’d not expected. That is to say I felt some primal psychological relevance in Fleabag, that, through its treatment and insights the film seems to have addressed, and quenched, a self-understanding previously only ever partly grasped in me. Such a gift-of-release from some ignorance is potential to the core experience of all great art. Thank you.

Trying hard to be different - and does, at times, manage to be be at least quirky - but relies endlessly on shock factor to float a stream of fairly shallow gags. The continual shared looks and side commentary to the audience went from entertaining novelty to pretty old quite quickly. The central protagonist is emotionally disconnected and doesn't offer much to engage with, and the inclination to continue watching was really only propped up by the emerging backstory of her deceased friend.

As equally hilarious as it is devastating, the show follows the perspective of a lewd, sex-crazed loon as she manoeuvres her way around the death of her best friend. Amazing cast, incredible script, and direction. One of the best dramatic comedies I have ever seen. And if you thought season 1 was good, just wait until you see season 2. Highly recommend this to anyone and everyone.
