About this movie

Woman in Gold is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting ‘The Lady in Gold’. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.

In the end the film corrected a first impression about Ryan Reynolds being miscast. Helen Mirren adroitly carries a large slice, but Tatiana Maslany's acting (as the young Maria Altmann) should not be overlooked. And although we sometimes feel like we're floating rather lightly over what should otherwise be a more poignant drama, Woman in Gold nonetheless succeeds in reminding us all that as long as certain authorities keep doing what they're doing, the Nazi crimes persist through time. At least for Ms Altmann, and for the lady in gold, one crime was stopped.

Superbly acted and deeply emotive movie. Another poignant reminder that we must never forget nor shy away from the suffering of others and that we must always be willing to fight for what is right.

Not only a good drama but could fit well into the documentary genre. Ms. Mirren's acting is outstanding!
