About this movie

Westside story is the award winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliette. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Skarks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climatic and heartbreaking ending.

I actually live for this movie. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. The chemistry between Rita and George is amazing. There's always high energy in the dance scenes and I just love this movie. It definitely deserved to win 10 Oscars! I can't even pick a favorite song. They're all so great for different reasons. There's so much emotion and I love it.

This came out when I was in grade school. My teacher bought the record (vinyl) so we could hear the music. Then we learned the words to Maria and Somewhere. Because of it I went into choir and loved every minute.

A MASTERPIECE !!! To me, the best musical of all time. The performances, the dancing , the music WONDERFUL. Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, Natalie Wood, SUPERB So disappointed about the new movie..........CANNOT compare to this classic of all time. Don't know what Spielberg (who I love) was thinking by trying to remake this classic. Can never be topped!
