About this movie

In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha--an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

If you're going to use an actors voice, use the actor, not a poorer substitute for an already marginal actor. This actor rips off Keanu Reeves worse than Christian Slater ripped Jack Nicholson in Heathers. Liked the movie until every time the actor who plays Valerian speaks, which is far too often. I wish it was available in French, I'd rather read subtitles than watch this movie and hear him speak. I will avoid all Dane Dehaan films like the plague in the future. BOOO!

A perfectly average film where, given the fantastic visuals and imaginative world-building, it could've been fantastic. Sometimes it's goofy, creative fun like it should be... but then the script goes in the way to try to tell a complex story that falls completely flat on its face. Plus, the leads are embarrassingly stiff. A one-time watch if you like weird science-fiction, but the uneven tone is hard to get used to. Meh. 5/10. Rihanna's opening scene was awesome tho

Fun film, great effects, engaging plot. One reviewer actually said he hadn't watched the film. I suspect that's true of many of the poor reviews. Many of them really show their ignorance of the genre. No, this is not a great movie, a la Fifth Element, but it is entertaining and engaging. The effects are great, and there is a plot which moves along nicely. Alpha City and the races there really fire up the imagination, the way sci-fi should. Some reviews complain the film was hard to follow - possibly true if you have the attention span of a gnat, but I didn't find that to be true at all. The main characters could have been refined a little more, but overall, a good film.
