About this movie

Suffering from acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee has chosen to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside. Surprisingly, the ghost of his deceased wife appears to care for him, and his long lost son returns home in a non-human form. Contemplating the reasons for his illness, Boonmee treks through the jungle with his family to a mysterious hilltop cave, the birthplace of his first life. Winner of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, UNCLE BOONMEE is a fantastical tale of life as it ends and begins again.

I have seen this movie quite few times, and each time I revisit it I am struck by Weerasethakul's treatise on death, karma, and where people belong. Boonmee is a dying farmer whose ethereal experience surrounding his musings on the afterlife begins to affect his family in a variety of ways, both spiritual and material. A monster movie on one end and a Buddhist parable on the other, 'Uncle Boonmee who Can Recall His Past Lives' is a masterpiece of Eastern cinema and assures Apichatpong Weerasethakul's place at the table of modern masters.

A lovely introspective piece about the nature of death, and how it effects all those around us.
