About this movie

Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the "fellowship" apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.

As a fan of Tolkien's work and someone who researched into his life for a thesis, I found the movie a very good foundation into the challenges he faced and how that was translated into his work. While the movie slightly romanticised the relationships and very much down played Tolkien's beliefs it did express some of the key elements and how he used Middle-Earth to cope with the horror and struggles he dealt with in the life. As to the actors, settings and screenplay it flowed rather well but the cutting of the timeline to jump between youth and adulthood was my only frustration.
