About this movie

TO THE WONDER is the beautiful and acclaimed latest offering from Terrence Malick, the legendary director of The Tree of Life. The film is centred on Neil (Ben Affleck, Argo [2012]), a man who is torn between two loves: Marina (Olga Kurylenko, Quantum of Solace), the European woman who comes to the United States to be with him, and Jane (Rachel McAdams, Midnight in Paris [2011]), the old flame he reconnects with from his hometown. Neil's doubts about his life and loves are reflected in the crisis of faith experienced by Father Quintana (Javier Bardem, Skyfall), who only sees pain and the loss of hope in the world. In TO THE WONDER, Malick explores how love and its many phases and seasons -- passion, sympathy, obligation, sorrow, indecision -- can transform, destroy, and reinvent lives.

I'm still wondering what was the point of this film, Ben Affleck has no dialogue and the rest is mostly subtitled garbage. An absolute bore, I only watched a third of it. Don't waste your money renting.

Never before seen such a portrayal of playful, intimate, everyday love. And then she asks 'Why does my love sometimes turn to hate?' (In another Malik film, Cate Blanchett describes how their earlier relationship had soured when he had appeared irritated by little things.) In this film the Affleck character makes no excuses for his life-choices and occasional emotional outbursts. But he is me, and I am him, so no need to justify anything.

Terrible, misogynistic film. As if women would dote after a man like that.
