About this movie

New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest — within which lurks an unknown evil. Strange and unsettling things begin to happen almost immediately — animals turn malevolent, crops fail, and one child disappears as another becomes seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, family members accuse teenage daughter Thomasin of witchcraft, charges she adamantly denies. As circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member's faith, loyalty and love become tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.

First off, for the love of cinema, people need to stop categorizing this as "creepy", "unsettling", and "scary" and definitely not as a "horror" film. This is not a film that depicts any of these tags. This movie is bad in every way and shouldn't be placed in any horror movie section. The whole movie leaves you thinking that there will be more to it, but fails to deliver. And the trailer built it to be something it's definitely not. If you like waiting for something interesting to happen, this movie is for you. You'll wait until the end and then wonder what you just watched and why you listened to the people who gave this movie praise and more than one star. This movie is not creepy and has no build up to anything. The ending was pure rubbish as well. The ONLY thing you can be appreciative of about this movie is the historical accuracies of the time (language, clothes, setting). The acting was great along with the atmosphere, but outside of these things there is literally nothing, no mass to this film. People speaking of this as "superb" and "amazing" have literally no taste in quality cinema. THERE IS NO STORY HERE, NO BUILD UP TO ANYTHING, besides wondering why you decided to watch this rubbish to the end. Another example as to why you don't take Rotten Tomatoes score system as a way to gauge the quality of any movie. Don't listen to the "film majors" and neckbeard hipsters who see this as a "work of art", they're undoubtedly wrong. And if you don't believe me, rent this and see for yourselves. This is the only movie I've ever gotten a refund for a ticket on.

I enjoy this movie, but it is alittle difficult to understand. They speak english...but its old english...you have to watch it for a big to understand what's happening. Other than that though it think its a work of art, the actinbg is great and the camera work is perfect and on point. I think this film tries to play with suspense and fear of the unknown....it basically just makes you wait for something, and then when your offguard BOOM.

The story is more creepy than scary. I found it odd that creepy music begins playing in scenes where absolutely nothing happens. The dialogue is all in old English and a lot of it seemed to be mumbled making it hard to understand what they are saying throughout most of the movie. I was told that Steven King said it was the scariest movie he'd ever seen. Don't think that was true or he's really just a big wimp. Am sorry I bought it. Wish I had just rented but at the time renting wasn't an option.
