About this movie

The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

This film is visually beautiful in its own right but is also well acted by the leads and the child actors. Doug Trumbull's practical effects are also a rare treat. This film is unafraid to ask big questions. While To The Wonder comes across as a clichéd Calvin Klein advert, Tree of Life manages to stay grounded while daring to soar through time and space.

Love watching this film. I can understand its not for everyone, as most people have the patience and attention of a damp towel.

Possibly the worst film ever made. I don't get the point?!! Don't waste my time with visuals and underlying messages. Films are supposed to tell a story. Not whatever this is.
