an interesting flick, but the laconic John Wayne is cast too far against type attempting to play and honour bound German freighter captain trapped in an Australian port as World War II begins. Likewise Lana Turner is also cast improbably as the scion of a German military family fallen on hard times. They seem to almost walk through their roles, as if they had decided any attempt to actually act as the inheritors of German military tradition was beyond them. The story itself is well told, the writing tight, and the direction on point. Regrettably, whenever the story calls for bad weather or trouble, exterior shots of the German freighter switch to models. The transition from images of the real freighter in the model is so abrupt and the model so inadequate that the effect is jarring. It's a shame that the studio went for star power instead of casting actors more suited for the leads. It's also a shame for Wayne and Turner, as there considerable abilities were ill used in this film.
