About this movie

Considered one of the greatest films ever made, The Rules of the Game (La règle du jeu), by Jean Renoir, is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a marquis’ country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut bourgeois acquaintances. The film has had a tumultuous history: it was subjected to cuts after the violent response of the premiere audience in 1939, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II; it wasn’t reconstructed until 1959. That version, which has stunned viewers for decades, is presented here.

Simply one of the greatest. Do not expect to get it on your first watch though. Masterpieces lile this require multiple viewings and comprehension to absorb all its nuances, subtleties and greatness. Timeless film. Overall outstanding performances. The themes explored are plentiful and quite profound, actually. Still a lot of good things about this film. All in all, it was worth the reputation it has.

I was looking forward to this movie but the subtitles were impossible to read so I had to quit. They were light and i had to squint with computer to my face, stop the movie to make out the words.
