this is not traditionally a studio ghibli film, in fact the unique colouring of the studio's logo nearing the beginning helps indicate as such. The simple fable presented within this film is moving and layered with its minimalism which allows for an arrange of interpretations from universal audiences. Similar to "father and daughter", the red turtle is special and easily dudok de wit's best cinematographic work, this film deserves to go down as one of the greats amongst the studio ghibli domain.

Beautifully understated film that reflects both the long traditions of animation in France and Japan. The style is minimal but very moving. There isn't much in the way of dialogue but so much meaning is conveyed simply by the way the characters breathe or move. Can't recommend this enough.
