About this movie

If you could commit any crime without consequences, what would you do? From the producer of Paranormal Activity and Sinister, comes an inventive thriller that dares you to survive the most dangerous night in America -- The Purge -- when all crime is legal for 12 hours. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin's (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide. (Original Title - The Purge)

Good overall start to The Purge franchise, acting isn't too bad and the theme of the movie was better than I expected. I had heard much about this movie and though initially not fussed about it, after watching, I wasn't disappointed. However, having seen the next additions - Anarchy and Election Year, this has to be the least interesting but don't let that put you off as it really is better to watch the whole 'Purge' franchise.

A good concept, however the film lacks any depth with more emphasis on scaring the audience with cheesy props like the masks than creating any true suspense within the storyline. The story has no real twists that you'd expect from a 'thriller', and every attempt at making one is very foreseeable in a film that is highly predictable throughout. Furthermore the clumsy attempt at a moral statement toward the climax ("climax" being used very loosely) of the film feels cheap and cliché. All in all a very poor film that does not live up to its premise, with huge plot holes that leave you shouting at the screen instead of transfixed on the edge of you seat. Good concept, poor execution.

One of the few movies that I've actually walked out of half way through. This film has the lot: poor acting, a plot which lacks both pace and interest, and poorly-written characters who are little more than caricatures. Just avoid it.
