About this movie

From the outer reaches of space to the to the backwoods of southern Georgia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before. And only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and an evolutionary biology professor can prevent the end of the human race.

I read a Hollywood industry analysis of this movie recently. The film more or less tanked at the box office, barely making a profit. The projection at the time was that its revenue from China might yet save it, financially at least. The analyst's take-home message in the piece was that the studio's only mistake was spending twice as much on this film as was spent on 'Predators'. He was wrong. The studio's mistake was in putting out a badly written/edited/acted film that makes no sense and has little to no relation to any other entry in the franchise's history. Shane Black's attachment to the credits is really about all there is to say this is a Predator movie. The familiar pattern of alien hunters coming to Earth to test themselves against the baddest we have to offer is gone. It is replaced by some mumbo jumbo about a super-Predator, a civil war, and the aliens wanting an autistic kid's brain for the next stage in their evolution. For real. This could literally be a Syfy original movie. It might be worth a rental when its on offer, but I couldn't recommend paying anywhere near full price to sit through this mess.

This film sucks in so many ways it's hard to know where to start. Plot doesn't know whether it's supposed to be serious or tongue in cheek. It feels like Shane Black borrowed bits of plot from other films and then cut n pasted them together - then threw in some stereotype characters, a kid, all served with a big helping of slightly crappy CGi and you end up with a film that's a pale reflection and an insult to the original and best Predator movie.

This movie had the potential to be good, but they wasted it with trying to make it a comedy. The original Predator had humour, but it wasn't a comedy. The blood is the wrong colour, which could be explained by the "upgrades" but it just doesn't look right, and I know the Predator films have never been high budget but the CGI in this looks like it's from the mid 2000's - if you're bored and you're curious about it, give it a watch, just be prepared to roll your eyes a lot and I do mean A LOT.
