Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Meryl Streep team for the first time in this thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between Katharine Graham, publisher of The Washington Post, and hard-nosed editor Ben Bradlee, as they expose a cover-up of government secrets spanning three decades. I just can't put my finger on it. But something is not entirely right with this film. It has all the ingredients for a great story, but somehow it comes out of the oven half-baked. Which is rather surprising, given the many renowned personalities associated with it. Nevertheless, The Post is a timely reminder of the importance of a free press in a world governed in many places by shady political operatives and opportunists who would be too happy to get rid of journalists.

This film is the ideal companion piece to the classic film, All the President's Men, with the story of how the Washington Post under the leadership of Kay Graham joined the fight to publish the explosive Pentagon Papers. While this story gives short shrift to the New York Times, the first paper to truly publish the paper, it is still a compelling drama of a woman suddenly thrust into a crisis that would have the Freedom of the Press in the balance and how her decision not to buckle under pressure would turn the Washington Post into one of the most important newspapers in the nation.

Not worth $3.99. The two names carry this movie, but that's about it. Long, unstimilating, slow, insignificant. I don't know why this story deserves the big sceen.
