In 1776 South Carolina, widower Benjamin Martin (Gibson) finds himself thrust into the midst of the American Revolutionary War as he helplessly watches his family being torn apart by the savage forces of the British Redcoats. When his oldest son's wife is ruthlessly killed, and his young son is shot through the back before his eyes, Martin is unable to suppress the soldier within that he tried to bury with his own military past. Unable to remain silent, he recruits a band of unlikely volunteers to take up arms against the British. Fighting to protect his famliy's freedom and his country's independence, Martin discovers the pain of betrayal, the redemption of revenge, and the passion of love. © 2000 Global Entertainment Productions GmbH & Co. After 30 minutes I could watch no more... the movie was quickly turning into a kids' super hero movie. It reached an early climax when Benjamin Martin's (Gibson), with the help of his two young boys (ages 6-10?), ambush a British unit marching through the woods. During the ambush the British look like bumbling fools who can't shoot, while Martin and his boys can't miss. Martin soon engages in hand to hand combat. The fight scene was ridiculously unbelievable. Martin takes on 3-4 Red Coats at a time and finds a way to kill each one. This is an action movie for adolescents and not a historical drama.

Mel Gibson is one of those actors who never dissolves into the character. You are always seeing Mel Gibson. The scenes are spectacular and Brattonsville SC is a real place but that was it for me.
