First, you don't need to see Tatami Galaxy first as one reviewer said. I didn't and enjoyed this very much. Second, this movie was so fun! It was reminiscent of Spirited Away, but not in the way that the plot is similar, or it's inspired by it, but that there are call backs to many popular anime movies and shows while spinning a really interesting adventure about an amazing night! Watch the trailer, it captures a lot of the whimsy and thoughtfulness that this story is made up of. Heads up for a gropey guy who is treated like a nuisance but never really suffers for being cruddy. It's brief, thankfully.

A fun and energetically-animated story about love, drinking, used books, and not taking life so seriously. Very dreamlike storytelling. Overall, a charming and offbeat tale that doesn't seem to mind its occasional lack of focus. Something I like about this movie is how it plays fast and loose with time and reality. The things you see and when they happen are simultaneously metaphor and reality in the world of this film. It really is a reminder that storytelling—and animation especially—doesn't need to constrain itself to the standard ideas of logic and chronology. In fact, the majority of the charm on display here is thanks to that disregard of typical narrative structure.

This film easily could have been a 5- star if it hadn't have turned the main protagonist from a happy go lucky, charismatic and all around wonderful lead into a device to help the creepy and leech like antagonist feel better about himself. The film started out fun and was really endearing but it definitely could have done without the "female saves an incel" narrative.
