About this movie

Reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) is left alone in the lakeside home he built for her. She tries as best she can to keep it together, but then nightmares come – disturbing visions of a presence in the house calling to her, beckoning her with a ghostly allure. Against the advice of her friends, she begins digging into her husband's belongings, yearning for answers. What she finds are secrets both strange and disturbing – a mystery she's determined to unravel. Along with Rebecca Hall (HOLMES & WATSON, CHRISTINE), THE NIGHT HOUSE stars Sarah Goldberg (BARRY), Vondie Curtis Hall (DIE HARD 2, EVE'S BAYOU), Evan Jonigkeit (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, SWEETBITTER), and Stacy Martin (VOX LUX, NYMPHOMANIAC).

I saw this FANTASTIC movie early opening, so I was alone in the theater. Good thing. I jumped up a couple of times. Good scares, great terror, amazing cast and locations, and I could go on. If you like horror that simmers and boils the whole time, finally bubbling up and over in the end, then you'll love this one. Even when it's over, you'll think about it and be amazed at how well the story is told. Look for architecture and angles, historical figures and books, and real effects throughout.

I don't know what some of these other reviewers are talking about. It sounds like some of these reviews are talking about a completely different movie. I thought this was great. I love horror movies, but there aren't many that truly scare you or leave with an uncomfortable, creepy feeling hours after watching it. Like Hereditary. That movie was one of the best horror movies in a long time. Anyway, The Night House was really good, I thought. It gave me chills in several places, it made me jump in several places, it leaves you with a creepy feeling at the end. The use of perspective is also pretty creepy. If you like horror, this is definitely one to watch.

(Spoilers): This movie is without a doubt, one of the best films of its genre that I've seen in a long time. When you realize that this "Nothingness" or "demon" was a manifestation of her depression and trauma, of the sadness and grief she carried with her, it suddenly becomes even more terrifying. The personal darkness we all carry with us, all the unresolved conflict... it will be darker than any supernatural demon you can think up or try conjuring. Our troubles can never fully go away, but we must not listen to the voices of our deep suffering that try convincing us there's something wrong. We are stronger than that. In the end, her depression, with its grip so tightly around her, asked her to stay, asked her to make a final decision and to stop fighting. But, there's one voice that was stronger. Profoundly artistic, and deep. You have to be willing to think, not mindlessly consume entertainment. Great movie.
