On his way to school, Bastian (Barret Oliver) ducks into a bookstore to avoid bullies. Sneaking away with a book called "The Neverending Story," Bastian begins reading it in the school attic. The novel is about Fantasia, a fantasy land threatened by "The Nothing," a darkness that destroys everything it touches. The kingdom needs the help of a human child to survive. When Bastian reads a description of himself in the book, he begins to wonder if Fantasia is real and needs him to survive.

I never wanted to see this movie when I was a child (because of the name). But then when I watched it with my oldest brother one day. I instantly fell in love with the movie. It's become one of my personal favorite movies ever made. I loved everything about it from the characters to the visual places on Fantasia and the music. The Ivory Tower theme song and the main theme song are my most favorite songs from the movie. My favorite characters are Atreyu, Falkor, Bastian, and The Childlike Empress.

There are moments of silly fantasy tropes and cliche in the dialogue. The child acting is forgiveably bad. That's all that's holding the movie back because the movie is well paced, well constructed and brimming with lovingly crafted scenarios and set pieces. The special effects are such a treat and more believable and immersive than any hokey amount of CGI that has crept into and ruined fantasy filmwork. This is a superb vehicle for any age of person to feel the powerful sense of adventure.
